Jan Josef Chalupnicek was born in Prague, Czech Republic.
His first private lessons were under the Czech teacher Roman Benes. Jan left his homeland in 1968 and, following 3 months of dramatic life in a refugee camp, arrived in Canada in February, 1969.
After a short stop in Owen Sound, Ontario, Jan continued his fine art study at the University of Windsor. He later studied landscape architecture at the University of Toronto.
Jan's early work was in tempera, watercolor and oil. He also did print-making, sculpture, and worked in acrylics. He has made Calgary his home for the last 30 years and works mostly in oils.
Jan has exhibited at numerous art shows in and around Calgary. His paintings are in many corporate and private collections in Europe and North America.
Jan loves to paint with deep contrast of light and dark. Strong sunshine is obvious in his painting. He loves to paint landscapes and the rocky mountains and wants to share God's beauty.
